  • Post-treatment follow-up is not routine in most programs. Studies show high rates of post-treatment disease recurrence, which can result from poor adherence or undiagnosed resistance.
  • Individuals co-infected with HIV may develop new strains of TB as a result of compromised immune system.
  • It’s recommended that follow-up and re-evaluation occur every 3 months for at least a year.
  • Cost burden, poor nutrition, lack of understanding or support, and adherence all impact whether or not a person with TB achieves remission or experiences disease recurrence.
  • Mobile applications and websites can provide
  • Professional or peer support (advice, sharing, information, success stories, FAQs)
  • Tracking (meals, activities, weight, blood pressure, records management)
  • Reminding (SMS/email/notifications, appointment alerts, service locator, adherence)
  • Funding (money transfer, donations)
  • In-person and virtual health or nutrition coaches have also been shown to help individuals get and stay well. TB Champions, or survivors, supporting individuals going through treatment can also be quite powerful.
